Western Digital Caviar Green (WD20EARX) 2 TB Hard Disk Drive Review

The Improved 2 TB WD Caviar Green

The Western Digital WD20EARX hard disk drive improves on the previous generation 2 TB Caviar Green (WD20EARS) hard disk drive by adding a new SATA 6 Gbps interface. Nothing else was changed - it still used the older 667 GB platters, the same spindle speed and the same 64 MB SDRAM buffer.

Physically, the new 2 TB Caviar Green with Advanced Format Technology and 6 Gbps interface looks like any other 3.5" desktop hard drive, with a label on the top plate and an uncovered PCB on the underside. The label has a lot of important information, like the hard drive model and capacity. There are also interesting details like its date and place of manufacture. This particular drive was manufactured in Thailand on 22 June, 2011.

Usable Capacity

This Western Digital Caviar Green 2 TB hard disk drive officially has a formatted capacity of 2,000,398 MB. We checked that out by formatting it in NTFS using Windows Vista.

The actual formatted capacity was 2,000,396,742,656 bytes. This is slightly (396 MB) above than the official formatted capacity. With about 155 MB allocated to the NTFS file system, the actual usable capacity remained slightly above 2 TB.

Let's take a look at its specifications.
