OCZ PC2-6400 Platinum Enhanced Latency XTC DDR2 Memory Kit |
The OCZ PC2-6400 Platinum Enhanced Latency XTC DDR2 Memory Kit is yet another OCZ memory kit to feature their new XTC heatspreader. This new heatspreader design not only has a honeycomb design, but also does away with heatspreader clips. But whether that really helps in improving its cooling efficiency is still up for debate. Unfortunately, this memory kit only has a capacity of 1GB. While that may be enough a year or two ago, it is really not enough if you are a serious gamer or computer user. With games like F.E.A.R. requiring loads of memory, 2GB is really the way to go these days. Even Photoshop users will appreciate the advantage of having two gigabytes of memory. Its rated timings of 4-5-4-15 are not exactly inspiring either. We think it should have come with tighter timings, especially since these modules have an Enhanced Latency tag. Fortunately, if the need arises, these modules can still handle themselves well at tight timings. Although it could not achieve its rated clock speed of 800MHz DDR at the tighter timings of 3-3-3-8, it still did well with a stable clock speed of 584MHz DDR. That's much higher than the 400MHz DDR that its memory chips were rated for at 3-3-3. At its rated timings, we managed to rack up a final clock speed of 880MHz, which is 10% higher than its rated clock speed. However, we soon discovered that 880MHz was the absolute best the modules could do. Neither overvolting nor further loosening its timings would improve its overclockability. In fact, overvolting was detrimental to its performance! No matter what timings these modules ran at, further overvolting them beyond 2.1V reduced their overclockability. These modules certainly do not enjoy being overvolted too much. Although the 10% overclock we achieved with these modules may seem like nothing, the memory chips in these modules are actually being overclocked and overvolted far beyond what they were rated for. So, in retrospect, squeezing out an extra 10% is truly a bonus for these memory chips. It's good to note that OCZ is backing up these memory modules with a lifetime warranty. No matter how overclocked or overvolted the memory chips in these memory modules are, you can be assured of a replacement from OCZ should anything untoward happen to the modules. While this memory kit may not be quite suitable for those who need loads of memory, it's still worth checking out if you are in the market for PC2-6400 DDR2 SDRAM. The unique gold-plated XTC heatspreader with its honeycomb design certainly adds a touch of class to any case mod. For more details, read our Comprehensive Review! |

* Our New Review System
ARP is committed to developing new ways to improve your experience with us. As part of our continuous efforts to improve the value of our reviews to you, we are implementing a new review system.
This new review system is designed to allow you to quickly receive information on the latest hardware. This new system also allows you to quickly get the gist of the review without reading through it. This can be very useful, especially in situations where you need to make a quick purchase decision.
In this new system, we start with a Product Overview whenever a company sends us a press release about their latest product. We shift through extraneous PR-talk to create a straightforward summary of the product's features as well as specifications. This allows you to quickly find out all the pertinent details about the product, without reading through official press releases.
When we receive the product for review, we will quickly take photos of it and create a Pictorial Review. The purpose of a pictorial review is to allow you, the reader, to quickly examine the product visually. It may help you make better purchase decisions, especially if you cannot wait for the full review.
After thorough testing, we will post a Comprehensive Review of the product. This adds on to the pictorial review with comprehensive test results and our final conclusion on the product.
But no matter whether you are reading a Pictorial Review or a Comprehensive Review, you can always read the summary of the review as well as examine the product's specifications right on the first page. In all our new reviews, we will maintain the first page as a Product Overview page. If the product is listed in PriceGrabber, you can also check out the lowest price online.
We hope this new review system will make your experience a lot more enjoyable and informative!
