Testing The Ballistix Active Cooling Fan

The Testbed

Processors

Intel Core i7-965 Extreme Edition

Motherboard

ASUS P6T Deluxe (Intel X58 Express)

Memory

Three Kingmax 2 GB DDR3-1333 modules

Memory Cooler

Crucial Ballistix Active Cooling Fan

Graphics Card

Galaxy GeForce GTX 260+ OC

Operating System

Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit

Testing Methodology

We tested in Microsoft Windows 7 with the latest updates. We ran the testbed with a mix of active applications running. These include a game (Fallout : New Vegas) and an antivirus software scanning the attached hard disk drives in the background.

The temperature results were obtained using a Fluke 62 Mini infra-red thermometer. We took spot measurements over several hours of testing to obtain the maximum surface temperature of the memory modules under ambient air flow. Then we installed the Crucial Ballistix active cooling fan and repeated the test.

Maximum Temperature

We monitored the surface temperature of the three Kingmax DDR3-1333 memory modules while running several applications simultaneously. Please note that instead of giving you the absolute numbers, we are showing the temperature delta, which is the difference between the actual temperature and the ambient room temperature.

Despite our testbed being in the open and benefiting from a reasonably good air flow from the fan above, adding the Crucial Ballistix active cooling fan made a huge difference in the maximum temperature of the memory modules. We noted a drop in temperature of no less than 6 °C. In other words, this cooler makes a big difference in cooling the three Kingmax DDR3 memory modules.
