ASUS EAH4870 Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Card Review Rev. 2.0

Packaging

The ASUS EAH4870/G comes in a big cardboard box. Typical of all ASUS graphics cards, the box was well-designed with excellent print quality. The EAH4870/G is actually just the basic EAH4870 model with a copy of Alone In The Dark bundled with the kit. Hence, the official card model is just EAH4870, which you can see printed on the box. To differentiate it from the cheaper, basic EAH4870 model though, this box features the Alone In The Dark motif.

Inside, you will find a very stylish black cardboard box containing the EAH4870 card and two smaller black boxes. The larger, flat box contains the documentation and CDs while the smaller, rectangular box is where all the cables and adaptors are stored.

Once you take everything out, you will find the following items :

  • One ASUS EAH4870 graphics card
  • One DVI-to-VGA adaptor
  • One DVI-to-HDMI adaptor
  • One HDTV cable
  • One composite-out adaptor
  • One PCI Express power cable
  • One CrossFire cable
  • One ASUS graphics card manual
  • One ASUS driver and utilities CD
  • One ASUS e-manual CD
  • One Alone In The Dark game DVD
  • One leather mouse pad

As both the basic EAH4870 and game-bundle EAH4870/G kits feature the same card, we will just call it the EAH4870 graphics card.

Accessories & Value-Added Items

The kit comes with virtually everything you need to hook up the EAH4870 to all kinds of display options, from CRTs to LCDs and HDTVs. The left-most cable is the PCI Express power cable, which is actually a Y-splitter that allows you to use a standard Molex power cable to power the EAH4870 card. This is great for those with power supplies that only have a single PCI Express power cable. Then, from left to right, you have the DVI-to-VGA, the DVI-to-HDMI and the composite-out adaptors. At the far right is the HDTV component cable. Finally, the kit comes with a CrossFire cable.

The manual is the standard ASUS manual for ATI graphics cards, which is useful if you are a newbie who do not know how to install the card or the driver. ASUS also provided a CD with a multi-lingual e-manual and a driver and utilities CD. Of course, the graphics driver was already old and outdated so it is only useful if you were not able to first download the latest version online.

Finally, the kit comes with two value-added items - a mouse pad and a copy of the Alone In The Dark game. ASUS claims the mouse pad is made from leather, but frankly, it looks more like faux leather (aka PVC) than real leather. With that said, the mouse pad is well-made and not only looks good but also feels pretty good to use.
