ED#194 : One Year GST Holiday On Computers
For all of the GST drama today, here is a bit of good news for the Malaysian consumer. Empty computer shops and a 93% drop in online sales on the first day of GST implementation have persuaded the Malaysian government to announce a one-year GST holiday for computer hardware and software. Check out their short press release :
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, 1 April, 2015 - The Ministry of Finance has ordered a temporary suspension of GST collection on computer hardware and software for a period of one year, ending on the 31st of March 2016. Those who have been charged GST for their computer hardware and software may claim a refund from the vendor. Smartphones and portable devices that have mobile telecommunication capabilities (3G, LTE) built-in are not considered computers and will remain taxable. |
This has led to a flurry of excited responses from the computer and smartphone industries :
Microsoft Malaysia Microsoft Malaysia is delighted with the Malaysian government decision to put the people's interest above everything else. Microsoft will support that endeavour by offering Windows 7 and Windows 8 users in Malaysia a free upgrade to Windows 10, including the hundreds of thousands of pirated copies. Malaysia boleh! |
Intel Malaysia We are overjoyed with the Malaysian government's tax holiday for computers, which we believe should have been classified as "essential goods". The modern individual can no longer live without a computer, and every Malaysian should have the right to own one. |
AMD Malaysia We are extremely excited that the Malaysian government is giving the Malaysian people a tax holiday on computer hardware and software. To celebrate, AMD will be working with our partners to offer buy one, free one and buy one, free two bundles! Don't buy a computer until you hear from us! |
Apple Malaysia We are deeply disappointed in the Malaysian government's refusal to qualify the smartphone as a computer. Our smartphones not only cost more than a computer, they can do things that ordinary computers can't. They also look much nicer than any ordinary computer. Except our MacBooks and iMacs. |
Samsung Mobile Malaysia Samsung Mobile Malaysia will help Malaysians save money by paying for the GST of every Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge you purchase. The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge will be available for pre-order starting tomorrow. We encourage Malaysians to save more by buying more. |
