Samsung EcoGreen F2 (HD154UI) 1.5 TB Hard Disk Drive Review

Samsung EcoGreen F2

Samsung offers two lines of desktop hard disk drives - the high-performance Spinpoint line, and the eco-friendly EcoGreen line.

The main difference between the two lines is the spindle speed. The Spinpoint drives have a spindle speed of 7200 RPM while the EcoGreen drives run at a more sedate 5400 RPM.

The Samsung EcoGreen line currently consists of the EcoGreen F2 family of drives which are available in capacities ranging from 500 GB to 1.5 TB, and the EcoGreen F3 family which offer a wider range of storage capacity, from just 250 GB up to 2 TB.

Today, we will be looking at the top model in the Samsung EcoGreen F2 family - the 1.5 TB Samsung HD154UI hard disk drive. It boasts the following features :

  • Improved performance with dual-ARM based firmware
  • Improved recording stability over temperature with PMR
  • Advanced dynamic FOD control for best data integrity
  • Intelligent compensation of external disturbance
  • SATA Native Command Queuing Feature
  • Device Initiated SATA Power Management
  • Environment friendly product with RoHS compliance
  • ATA S.M.A.R.T. Compliant
  • ATA Automatic Acoustic Management Feature
  • ATA 48-bit Address Feature
  • ATA Device Configuration Overlay Feature
  • NoiseGuard™
  • Rotational vibration sensor
  • SilentSeek™

Let's take a look at the drive!

Packaging

The Samsung EcoGreen F2 1.5 TB hard disk drive we obtained for this review was an OEM-packed unit. Instead of coming in a sealed anti-static plastic packet with nothing more than a sachet of dessicants to keep it dry, our EcoGreen F2 drive came enclosed within a hard plastic clamshell. This makes it shipping-ready. Just wrap some padding around the clamshell to firmly secure the drive within the box and it's good to go.

Inside the clamshell, Samsung actually provided an installation guide as well as a pack of four screws. This is quite a rarity for no-frills OEM-packed hard disk drives.
