IOPS Scaling (Random)

In these tests, we tested each drive's ability to tackle multiple input/output operations - a very important attribute if you wish to use the new VelociRaptor or SSD in a server, or server-type application. This reflects not only on the drive's raw performance but also that of its controller and firmware.

4 KB Random Read

There was no competition at all when it came to small random reads. The two Intel SSDs were just way beyond the capabilities of the two VelociRaptors.

4 KB Random Write

The same thing happened when we tested for small random writes. The only difference was that the Intel 520 Series SSD did significantly better than the older Intel X25-M G2, when the number of simultaneous IOs ramped up. The 1 TB VelociRaptor did especially bad in this test.

512 KB Random Read

When it came to larger random reads, the VelociRaptors did better but the Intel SSDs were still much, much faster.

512 KB Random Write

The performance gap narrowed quite a bit when it came to large random writes, especially for the older 600 GB VelociRaptor. The 1 TB VelociRaptor continued to do poorly, because of the "Advanced Format Technology effect".
