Start Battery Calibration

Common Options : None

Quick Review

The lithium-ion battery used in most notebooks support the Smart Battery System (SBS), an industry standard rechargeable battery technology that allows the battery to monitor and report its status. However, the accuracy of the smart battery system deteriorates over time, particularly if the battery undergoes short discharge-recharge cycles, or is rarely discharged.

To correct this problem, the battery must be periodically recalibrated to synchronize the smart battery meter with the actual full charge capacity of the battery. This can be accomplished by the user running the notebook on battery power until it is reduced to 5% before recharging, or activating an automated battery calibration system. This is where the Start Battery Calibration BIOS feature comes in.

The Start Battery Calibration BIOS feature activates the notebook's automated battery calibration system. To activate the system, select the Start Battery Calibration BIOS setting and press Enter. The notebook will now recalibrate the battery by fully charging the battery before discharging it completely.

While the accuracy of the smart battery meter is important, we must also remember that most lithium-ion batteries have a lifespan of only 300-500 discharge cycles. Therefore, we should strike a balance between the maintaining an accurate battery meter and prolonging battery lifespan.

If you often use your notebook to the limits of its battery life (5-10% of its full charge capacity), you can consider calibrating only once every 6 months.

If you often run the notebook on battery power but rarely to the limits of its battery life, you should calibrate the battery every 3-4 months.

If you rarely run the notebook on battery power, then an inaccurate battery meter is hardly a concern, except for the rare occasions when you actually use the notebook on the go. If this is the case, there is no real need to recalibrate the battery on a periodical basis. However, you should recalibrate the battery before leaving for a trip.
