Trees, sun, the ocean, and a beautiful lady to bring along for the ride. Yes, life does indeed look good for you, Jack Carver.
Running a charter boat service in gorgeous Micronesia, with its beautiful islands and scenery, and a past no one knows much of, it all seems relatively uncomplicated. Things change though, when a beautiful and ambitious reporter, Val, shows up asking for a boat ride.
One thunderstorm later, the boat ride has been cut short. And you're dumped on an island in the middle of nowhere, suddenly faced with mercenaries who want to kill you, mutants that want to debone you, a missing reporter, and a story that slowly unravels to reveal the diabolical plans of an evil genius with aspirations, unsurprisingly, to take over the world.
Welcome to Far Cry, Hell's version of Paradise. Don't forget to rescue the girl!
Guns Aren't The Only Things That Can Hurt You
Far Cry is billed as a 'tactical/stealth' first-person shooter with an emphasis on intelligent and discretionary use of your weapons. In other words, you have to know when to shoot, hide and run. Or you're toast.
The overall feel of this particular FPS has been expertly executed. You have your standard HUD, with indicators for Health, Armour and Stamina. There is a stealth meter, which calculates and tells you how obvious your presence is to the enemy (familiar in concept for fans of the Thief games).
There is also a radar screen in the bottom left corner that shows the locations of known enemies and interestingly, pinpoints the origin of gunfire. Very handy if you're trying to figure out the location of a sniper or camouflaged mercenaries.
