The Western Digital My Passport Studio 640 GB did reasonably well in the USB 2.0 mode, scoring just above 13.4 MB/s. When we retested it using the FireWire interface, its throughput shot up to 14.5 MB/s.

It didn't do quite as well in the High-End test, where the desktop-class Western Digital My Book proved to be much faster. However, it was still faster than the other portable hard disk drives, especially while using the FireWire interface.
Transfer Rate Range
This chart shows you the range of platter-to-buffer transfer rates from the innermost track to the outermost track. In other words, it shows you the range of disk transfer rates of the hard drives (from minimum and maximum). However, because these drives are limited by the interface they are using, it actually reflects the performance of the drive's interface.
Using its FireWire interface, the Western Digital My Passport Studio delivered a good transfer rate of 40 MB/s, which is twice the speed of the 500 GB Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex. When we retested it using the USB 2.0 interface, it still managed to deliver a respectable transfer rate of 34.5 MB/s. It's not the best performance we have seen from a USB drive but it's far from the worst.
