Kingston 1GB HyperX PC2-8500 DDR2 Memory Kit Pictorial Review

The Modules

The memory kit consists of two 512MB HyperX PC2-8500 DDR2 modules. These modules have been tested by Kingston and verified to work well in a dual-channel system.

Each HyperX PC2-8500 module is covered by blue-anodized aluminium headspreaders that serve to dissipate heat from the memory chips. This is important if you intend to overclock and/or overvolt these modules.

Although the front and back heatspreaders look like they have the same motif, they are actually different. The front heatspreader has a DDR2 logo on the left, a Kingston logo in the middle and a label on the right. The back heatspreader, on the other hand, has a three column motif of a DDR2 logo on the right, a HyperX logo in the middle and a Kingston logo on the right.

As the packaging is hardly tamper-proof, it's important to visually check the label on the module to make sure you are buying the correct module.

The first line is the memory kit's part number - KHX8500D2K2/1G. If this matches the label on the box, then you got the right module. The second line is the Bill Of Material (BOM) number - 9905315-028.A00LF.

We have no idea what the third line is, but it is likely to be a batch or serial number for this module. The maximum rated voltage of 2.2V is so stated on the label, as well as its country of manufacture.

As stated on the label, you will void your warranty if you remove the label. Oddly, the label does not actually overlap the heatspreader clip. So, you can actually remove the clip and heatspreader without displaying the label and no one would be the wiser...

The heatspreaders are open on all sides, which allows for better aeration. It also allows for a better view of the contact between the memory chips and the heatspreader.

Peeking under the heatspreaders, we noticed nothing out of the ordinary. The memory chips were all properly taped to the heatspreaders. This is really a single-sided module, so only the front side of the module has memory chips.
