The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295 is a dual-slot graphics card that has a passing resemblance to the GeForce GTX 280. But instead of a plastic shroud, NVIDIA used a very nice metal shroud with tiny perforations and a matte finish that spells the end of nasty fingerprint marks. It also gives the card a nice feel and looks much nicer than the plastic shroud used in previous NVIDIA graphics cards.
The card comes with two dual-linked DVI ports which are capable of supporting resolutions of up to 2560x1600. Instead of the old 7-pin analog video-out port, the GeForce GTX 295 has a HDMI-out port. There is also a small LED located next to the HDMI port. That LED will light up if the card has insufficient power supply.
Although it looks like a GeForce GTX 280 or GeForce GTX 260 outside, the GTX 295 is quite a different beast inside. It has two PCBs with the heatsink sandwiched in between. This is a radically different approach from their previous GX2 designs. In fact, NVIDIA claims the new design improves cooling by 46%, compared to the design used in the GeForce 9800 GX2.
The GeForce GTX 295 only comes with a single SLI connector as it is already a SLI solution. Therefore, you can only pair it with another GeForce GTX 295 for a quad-SLI solution. It also supports PCI Express 2.0 with a 5 Gbps signalling rate. When used with a motherboard that supports PCI Express 2.0, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295 will have effectively double the PCI Express bandwidth of PCI Express 1.0 cards.
Of course, that does not mean the GeForce GTX 295 will be twice as fast as older PCI Express graphics cards. In fact, PCI Express bandwidth will only have a minimal effect on its graphics processing capability. The GeForce GTX 295 will still run fine on your current motherboard even if it only supports the PCI Express 1.1 standard. It is backward compatible with PCI Express 1.1 and will merely revert to the 2.5 Gbps signalling rate and a lower 8 GB/s bandwidth with these motherboards.
