Seagate 8GB Photo Hard Drive

The Seagate Photo Hard Drive looks just like any other CompactFlash card. But this CompactFlash card packs a miniature hard drive within its compact and robust case! What this means is a huge capacity of 8GB!

In addition, because it makes use of a 1" hard drive, you can buy it at a fraction of the cost of a flash-based CompactFlash card of the same capacity! It certainly offers a lot more value for your money. Of course, most people assume that since it's hard drive-based, it will be slower than its flash-based rivals. However, the new Seagate 8GB Photo Hard Drive punched clean holes in that assumption.

In our benchmarks, the 8GB Photo Hard Drive performed very well with large files. In fact, it outperformed even fast flash CompactFlash cards like the Kingston Elite Pro. Unfortunately, it faltered in small files. Even its 2MB buffer memory could not improve its performance with small files.

But we need to remember that the Seagate Photo Hard Drive is targeted at photographers using DSLRs. The photo files created are usually very large in size, especially if the photographer wants to use uncompressed formats like NEF or CRW. Its excellent read and write performance with such large files will serve it well in this capacity.

Truth be told, this card isn't really suitable as a portable storage medium for carrying your documents or other files. Not only is it slow at small files, you will need a separate reader to access the data. It would be much easier to use USB drives like the Corsair 4GB Flash Voyager or the Seagate 5GB Pocket Hard Drive.

If you are looking for a very large and cheap CompactFlash card for your photography needs, the new Seagate 8GB Photo Hard Drive is certainly the CompactFlash card to consider. It's fast where it counts, comes with a very large capacity and is much cheaper than flash-based cards. What else can you ask for?

* Our New Review System

ARP is committed to developing new ways to improve your experience with us. As part of our continuous efforts to improve the value of our reviews to you, we are implementing a new review system.

This new review system is designed to allow you to quickly receive information on the latest hardware. This new system also allows you to quickly get the gist of the review without reading through it. This can be very useful, especially in situations where you need to make a quick purchase decision.

In this new system, we start with a Product Overview whenever a company sends us a press release about their latest product. We shift through extraneous PR-talk to create a straightforward summary of the product's features as well as specifications. This allows you to quickly find out all the pertinent details about the product, without reading through official press releases.

When we receive the product for review, we will quickly take photos of it and create a Pictorial Review. The purpose of a pictorial review is to allow you, the reader, to quickly examine the product visually. It may help you make better purchase decisions, especially if you cannot wait for the full review.

After thorough testing, we will post a Comprehensive Review of the product. This adds on to the pictorial review with comprehensive test results and our final conclusion on the product.

But no matter whether you are reading a Pictorial Review or a Comprehensive Review, you can always read the summary of the review as well as examine the product's specifications right on the first page. In all our new reviews, we will maintain the first page as a Product Overview page. If the product is listed in PriceGrabber, you can also check out the lowest price online.

We hope this new review system will make your experience a lot more enjoyable and informative!
