End User Experience FAQs Part 2
Does WAU Work On Any Previous Versions Of Windows?
No. Windows Anytime Upgrade can only upgrade computers that are already running a version of Windows 7.
Is WAU Available On All Editions Of Windows 7?
WAU is a feature on all editions of Windows 7, except Ultimate and Enterprise Editions, which already contain all Windows 7 features. Additionally, WAU is not available to upgrade Windows 7 Starter to Windows 7 Home Basic. Microsoft is still determining the geographic scope of WAU availability and does not have any details to share at this time. Microsoft may communicate geographic restrictions on WAU at a later date.
Can An End User Upgrade To One Version And Upgrade Again To Another?
Yes, but the end user must purchase each upgrade. For example, an end user may upgrade to Windows 7 Premium first, and then to Windows 7 Ultimate.
Can An End User Upgrade From Home Basic Directly To Ultimate?
Microsoft is in the process of determining which upgrade paths will be offered to consumers. However, since Windows 7 will be distributed as a single image, the end user will be able to unlock a higher SKU in one upgrade if that upgrade path is offered.
Can Users Upgrade From 32-Bit To 64-Bit?
No. WAU simply unlocks features from an end user’s existing installation of Windows 7. After a WAU completes, the version the end user was running (32-bit or 64-bit) will remain the same.
