Conclusion
These company-issued advisories always need to be taken with a pinch of salt, but the latest NVIDIA advisory definitely required a lot more salt to swallow than usual. Coupled with the change in their marketing approach, this advisory makes NVIDIA look defensive and panicky. A far cry from their earlier bullishness, when they would set loftish goals of achieving market shares of 90-100%.
As dramatic as it may seem, the Radeon HD 4870 X2 really isn't a death knell for NVIDIA. Yes, the Radeon HD 4000 family of graphics cards has finally delivered what ATI have been promising their fans for years, but it will take a lot more to break NVIDIA's dominance of the graphics card market. Perhaps they had been so used to winning so easily that a credible challenge suddenly put them on unfamiliar territory.
Whatever the reasons are, it's good to finally have competition strong enough to give NVIDIA a case of the jitters. We, the consumers, have already started to benefit. The GeForce GTX 280 fell from US$650 to just US$415. Before the Radeon HD 4870 arrived, would it be conceivable for us to even imagine such a rapid drop in the price of NVIDIA's highest-end graphics card?
NVIDIA should just concentrate on delivering faster and more affordable graphics cards, instead of trying to badmouth the ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2. It just makes them look like sulky little boys who cannot get what they want, when they want. Heck, if they think that ATI is cheating with two GPUs on a single PCB, well, who's stopping them from doing the same thing? It's not like ATI has a monopoly on designing graphics cards with two GPUs.
Anyway, that is what WE think. What do YOU think? Let us know!
