Objectives
Why am I doing this? Well, I was curious to see how well my modded card will actually perform, when pitted against high-end cards like the GeForce FX 5950 Ultra.
At first, I wanted to see how well it would do against the Radeon 9800XT. But I decided to use the GeForce FX 5950 Ultra instead, simply because it would be more interesting to pit my modded cheap Radeon 9800SE against a much more expensive card from the rival camp.
I also decided to test the GeForce FX 5950 Ultra at stock speeds so that we can all see just how far a mid-range card like the Radeon 9800SE can perform against an off-the-shelf high-end card, when pushed to the edge!
Testing Methodology
Test Bed |
|
Processor | AMD Athlon XP ‘Barton’ 2500+ @ 3200+ at 2.0V |
CPU Cooler | Thermalright ALX-800 with Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste |
Motherboard | ABIT NF7-S Rev. 2.0 |
Chipset Cooler | Thermaltake Extreme Spirit |
Memory | Two 256MB DDR400 Corsair Value modules (2-3-3-7) |
Hard Disks | Two 80GB Seagate Barracuda SATA (RAID 0) |
Graphics Cards | ATI Radeon 9800SE 128MB |
Graphics Drivers | ATI Catalyst 4.5 (Soft-mod patched) NVIDIA Detonator 56.64 |
Operating System | Microsoft Windows XP Professional |
Every test was done with all unnecessary applications closed (anti-virus, utilities, etc.). Upon completion of each test, I rebooted to restore the system to the same condition for the next test. All tests were done with all settings and resolutions untouched.
Disclaimer
As a member of Team ARP, I'm obligated to report the actual benchmark results that I achieved. All the scores in this comparison are the actual ones I recorded. While there are some weird scores like what you will see later, they were exactly what I recorded. To ensure that it wasn’t a glitch or anything, I repeated the same test a few times, but they gave the same results.
Now that we’ve gotten all that sorted out, let's move on!
