The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti Tech Report

Today, NVIDIA officially announces the launch of the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti graphics card. This is part of their "reloading" programme. Back in 2010, they released the GeForce GTX 480 and GeForce GTX 460 graphics cards (remember the Tank and the Sniper?). This year, they replaced those two cards with the GeForce GTX 580 and GeForce GTX 560 Ti. Now, it's time to "reload" the GeForce GTS 450...

Remember the NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450? If you need to jog your memory, you should read our NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 Tech Report. It was at the GeForce GTS 450 launch when NVIDIA started their rather bizarre scheme of giving their graphics cards pet names. The GeForce GTX 480 was "The Tank", while the GeForce GTX 460 was "The Hunter" and the GeForce GTS 450, "The Sniper".

NVIDIA is persisting with the naming scheme, introducing the new GeForce GTX 550 Ti as "The Sniper Reloaded". In their own words, they "unleashed a second sniper to annihilate the enemy". In other words, they are not dropping the GeForce GTS 450. No, the GeForce GTS 450 will continue to be sold throughout 2011, just priced lower t han the GeForce GTX 550 Ti.

So what did this new sniper load up on? Let's take a look...
