Opening up the box, this is what you will see.
At the top left corner, you can just make out the speaker cables. The bottom right of the picture shows the 3-pin plugs that you use to connect the speakers to your 5.1 channel sound card.
Just above it is the remote control unit. This is a really cool feature because you don't have to physically go to the control pod to change the settings. Above it is a pair of Duracell AAA batteries. It's nice of them to include such good batteries in the package.
Let's take off the styrofoam cover, shall we?
The first thing that hits you is the size of the subwoofer. Whoah! No wonder the box was so heavy.
The next thing that hits you is the size of the aluminium heatsink hanging off the rear end of the speakers. That is where they house the 500 watts (RMS) ampifier. With that crazy amount of wattage, the heatsink is a must.
On the left hand of the picture, you can see the center speaker. On the right side, you can see the control pod that's lying face down in the box. Another thing I like is that all of them are in the gunmetal colour.
Now, let's see if I can find the other speakers...
Yet another layer of styrofoam removed
Ah... here they are. Those are pretty big satellites. This is a 5.1 channel speaker set. So, that pretty much accounts for all of the speakers.
Here is a shot of everything that was included in the speaker box.
In the picture is everything that came with the speaker set. In the front, you can see the remote control. The satellites are really "big". You can also see the control pod on the left side.
Here's a list of all of the things that were included:
-
1 x Subwoofer
- 1 x Control Pod
- 4 x Speaker Satellites
- 1 x Remote Controller
- 2 x AAA Duracell Batteries
- 4 x Speaker Cables (two 6-feet cables, and three 15-feet cables)
- 1 x six channel analog cable
- 1 x Allan key (for the speaker stands)
Here's a shot of the speaker cables that were included.
On both sides of the picture are the shorter cables. These cables are used to connect the front left and the front right speakers of the Z-680. The three cables in the middle are the longer ones that would be used to connect the center speaker and the rear two channels.
Why are the three cables longer than the other two? Simple really, that's because you need to put the rear speakers further to the back, compared to the front channels. The center speaker would normally be put on top of the monitor.
You can also see that Logitech included an Allan key with the speaker cables. We'll get to the Allan key later in the review.
Logitech has done a rather good job for their speaker cable leads.
As you can see from the picture above, the leads have been dipped into solder to prevent them from coming apart during installation or handling. It also reduces corrosion.
Here's a picture of the analog cables that connect the Control Pod to your sound card.
These are normal 5.1-channel speaker jacks. The green ones are for your front channels. The yellow ones are for your rear channels and the black ones are for the subwoofer channel.
