However, to achieve such a high clock rate, a few compromises had to be made. For starters, Corsair had to use a high latency of 5-5-5-15. This is certainly no low-latency module. If you are looking for low-latency, then you are out of luck. In addition, the modules have a capacity of only 512MB, giving the memory kit a total capacity of 1GB. Since this memory kit is targeted at power users and enthusiasts, the limited capacity may be an issue since it limits them to 2GB of memory with four DIMM slots. Even gamers and graphics editors are already going for 2GB of memory. Although this is Corsair's new flagship DDR2 memory kit, it's surprising to see that they came with the old XMS heatspreaders. We certainly expected them to use the newer and larger XMS heatspreaders with activity LEDs. That would have added more value to these modules, even though they are not targeted at case modders. With that said, we must give Corsair credit for hitting the 1GHz clock speed. This allows you to run the memory bus in synchrony with the front side bus, even with Intel processors that support a 1066MHz FSB. Of course, this memory kit isn't cheap. But if you can afford an Intel Pentium 4 EE system that runs at 1066MHz FSB, you can certainly afford this memory kit, or two! For more details, read our Pictorial Review! |
