Corsair 1GB XMS2-8500 DDR2 Memory Kit

This 1GB XMS2-8500 TwinX memory kit is Corsair's fastest dual-channel DDR2 memory kit. In fact, it's the first DDR2 memory kit to ship with an effective clock speed of 1066MHz for Intel platforms that support a 1066MHz FSB.

However, to achieve such a high clock rate, a few compromises had to be made. For starters, Corsair had to use a high latency of 5-5-5-15. This is certainly no low-latency module. If you are looking for low-latency, then you are out of luck.

In addition, the modules have a capacity of only 512MB, giving the memory kit a total capacity of 1GB. Since this memory kit is targeted at power users and enthusiasts, the limited capacity may be an issue since it limits them to 2GB of memory with four DIMM slots. Even gamers and graphics editors are already going for 2GB of memory.

Although this is Corsair's new flagship DDR2 memory kit, it's surprising to see that they came with the old XMS heatspreaders. We certainly expected them to use the newer and larger XMS heatspreaders with activity LEDs. That would have added more value to these modules, even though they are not targeted at case modders.

With that said, we must give Corsair credit for hitting the 1GHz clock speed. This allows you to run the memory bus in synchrony with the front side bus, even with Intel processors that support a 1066MHz FSB.

Of course, this memory kit isn't cheap. But if you can afford an Intel Pentium 4 EE system that runs at 1066MHz FSB, you can certainly afford this memory kit, or two!

* Our New Review System

ARP is committed to developing new ways to improve your experience with us. As part of our continuous efforts to improve the value of our reviews to you, we are implementing a new review system.

This new review system is designed to allow you to quickly receive information on the latest hardware. This new system also allows you to quickly get the gist of the review without reading through it. This can be very useful, especially in situations where you need to make a quick purchase decision.

In this new system, we start with a Product Overview whenever a company sends us a press release about their latest product. We shift through extraneous PR-talk to create a straightforward summary of the product's features as well as specifications. This allows you to quickly find out all the pertinent details about the product, without reading through official press releases.

When we receive the product for review, we will quickly take photos of it and create a Pictorial Review. The purpose of a pictorial review is to allow you, the reader, to quickly examine the product visually. It may help you make better purchase decisions, especially if you cannot wait for the full review.

After thorough testing, we will post a Comprehensive Review of the product. This adds on to the pictorial review with comprehensive test results and our final conclusion on the product.

But no matter whether you are reading a Pictorial Review or a Comprehensive Review, you can always read the summary of the review as well as examine the product's specifications right on the first page. In all our new reviews, we will maintain the first page as a Product Overview page. If the product is listed in PriceGrabber, you can also check out the lowest price online.

We hope this new review system will make your experience a lot more enjoyable and informative!
