Manfrotto 190PROB (Bogen 3001BPRO) Professional Tripod Review

The 190PROB

This is a medium-sized tripod, and is relatively heavy at 2.0 kg, even though Manfrotto calls it their lightweight tripod series. It's heavier than most DSLRs with a standard zoom lens!

Even though this tripod is mainly made out of aluminium, many components are still made from plastic. For example, all the locks as well as the rotating column holder are made from plastic. That's probably how they managed to keep the weight and price down.

The tripod

The letter "B" in the Manfrotto 190PROB model name denotes a black anodized finish. Unlike normal paint, anodized paint will be able to withstand some light punishment without chipping off.

As a smaller brother to the 055PROB tripod, the 190PROB isn't really very different from the 055PROB. The key differences are their maximum and minimum heights.

At 145 cm, with the legs and center column fully extended, the 190PROB is dwarfed by the 055PROB which towers 31 cm over it. However, this is really not a problem as the tripod head and camera itself will add 20-30 cm to the height of the tripod. So, the 190PROB will be able to accomodate every photographer, no matter how tall he/she is.

Fully extended

Its minimum height is equally impressive. Officially, it can go down to 21 cm above ground level. However, when we personally checked how low it can go, we found that it could go down to just 8 cm above ground level! Of course, you will need to add 10-20 cm for the tripod head as well as the camera (up to the level of the lens).

Minimum height

Because of its smaller size, Manfrotto rates the 190PROB's maximum load capacity at 5kg, which is slightly less than the 055PROB's load limit of 6 kg. That should be more than enough for most photographers, unless they own heavy, prime lenses.

Other than those differences, the 190PROB and 055PROB are virtually identical, especially in terms of features.
