Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Gen. 2 USB 3.0 Flash Drive Review

The 32 GB DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 G2

The Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 G2 is a very big USB flash drive, as they go these days. In fact, at 7.4 x 2.2 cm x 1.6 cm, it is truly the biggest USB flash drive we have ever tested. All that size isn't just for show though - the drive actually packs a real heft at about 40 g.

Kingston retained the first-generation DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0's simple but sturdy capped design. Any fancy mechanism would have added to the drive's considerable weight and bulk. The case is made of white plastic, with silver aluminium wrapping around the sides. The build quality is good, as you would expect from a Kingston drive.

The DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 G2 is backward-compatible with USB 2.0. Kingston improved the G2's power consumption to the point it doesn't require the Y cable that came with the first-generation DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 flash drive. You can just plug it into any USB 2.0 port and it will run just fine, albeit at a much slower speed.

Size Comparison

In these two pictures, we lined the Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Gen. 2 flash drive against a selection of four other USB flash drives - the first-generation Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0, the Kingston DataTraveler DT110G, the OCZ Mini-Kart and the Active Media Wink.

As you can see, both DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 drives are slightly longer than the DataTraveler DT110G (which is the size of most USB flash drives). However, they are also twice as thick, and more than twice as heavy.

Usable Capacity

Our review sample has a storage capacity of 32 GB - the mid-range model in the Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 2 series. We checked that out by formatting it in NTFS using Microsoft Windows 7. The actual formatted capacity was 32,040,349,696 bytes. This is slightly (40 MB) higher than the official capacity.

By default, it's formatted using the FAT32 file system with 8 KB clusters, which works fine with all Windows operating systems. However, you should reformat it to the NTFS, or even better, the exFAT file system, if you wish to copy files that are larger than 4 GB in size (e.g. movies).

Let's take a look at its specifications.
