What's New?

Conroe

So, what does the new Core 2 Duo processor have over its predecessors?

For starters, it's not comparable with the older processors based on the Netburst architecture. In fact, it doesn't even support Hyper-Threading which was a key feature of Netburst-based processors.

Instead, the new Core 2 Duo desktop processors come with these new features :

  • Wide Dynamic Execution
  • Smart Memory Access - Improves system performance by hiding memory latency.
  • Advanced Smart Cache - Allows one core to utilize entire cache when the other core is idle.
  • Advanced Digital Media Boost -  Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions in multimedia and graphic applications.
  • Intel® 64 Technology

The Core 2 Duo mobile processors, on the other hand, come with these new features :

  • Dynamic Power Coordination - Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power management state transitions independently per core to help save power.
  • Dynamic Bus Parking - Allows the chipset to power down with the processor in low frequency mode.
  • Enhanced Intel® Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing - Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity.

Pricing & Availability

The Intel® Core 2 Duo desktop processor-based systems will be available in early August 2006, while the Merom notebooks will only be available at the end of August 2006.
