When it comes to sequential accesses though, Advanced Format Technology had the opposite effect - greatly increasing the drive's performance, thanks to the higher areal density it allows.

Similarly, its sequential access time benefited from the higher areal density - the shorter distance between each bit reduces the amount of time it takes for the read/write head to move from one bit to its neighbouring bit.
