The 64 GB DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Gen 3

The 64 GB Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 G3 is a large and heavy USB flash drive, as they go these days. At just over 8.5 cm long, 2.3 cm wide and 1.2 cm thick, it is basically a thinner but much heftier version of the Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Gen. 2.

Kingston chose to use a capless, matte metal design for their third-generation DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0. The inner case is still made of plastic, but the outer case appears to be made from cast aluminium. To expose the USB 3.0 interface, just push the case on that end towards the middle. It will lock with a solid but muted click.

With an all-metal outer body, the new DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 G3 flash drive feels really solid and well-made. Although it is larger in size than many other USB flash drives, it doesn't feel cumbersome at all. In fact, its size is a welcomed respite from the popular micro flash drives that are so infuriatingly easy to lose!

Usable Capacity

Our review sample has a storage capacity of 64 GB - the top model in the Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 G3 series. We checked that out by formatting it in NTFS using Microsoft Windows 7. The actual formatted capacity was 62,910,427,136 bytes. This is quite a bit lower (109 MB) than the official capacity.

By default, it's formatted using the FAT32 file system with 4 KB clusters, which works fine with all Windows operating systems. However, you should reformat it to the NTFS, or even better, the exFAT file system, if you wish to copy files that are larger than 4 GB in size (e.g. movies). Do note though that while exFAT is faster and more efficient, it doesn't have the same recovery capabilities as NTFS.

Now, let's take a look at its specifications.
