Pre-Launch Details Of The Intel Bloomfield (Nehalem Desktop) Processor

As far back as September and October of 2007, we were already digging up details of Intel's next-generation micro-architecture, codenamed Nehalem. If you have not read our reports yet, take a look at the following articles :

Recently, we managed to lay our hands on insider information on the first Intel desktop processor based on the Nehalem micro-architecture. Codenamed Bloomfield, this processor will replace the quad-core 45nm Core 2 " Yorkfield" processors as Intel's flagship desktop processor.

Intel is already preparing their partners for the launch. To the right is an updated table showing the future positioning of Intel desktop processors with the Bloomfield right at the top. Intel will also be launching lower-end models for the Performance and Mainstream levels, as you will see later.

As this point in time, Intel has yet to officially brand the Bloomfield processor. However, it is likely that Intel will end up calling it the Core 3 processor to ride on the back of its tremendous marketing efforts for the Intel Core brand, even though it's based on a different micro-architecture.

When Will It Launched?

The date has not been finalized but Intel is on cue to launch it sometime during the last quarter of the year. From this slide, the Bloomfield appears to replace the quad-core Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9xxx series of processors, rather than displace them downwards.

Does that mean that the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9xxx processors are destined to be discontinued by the end of the year? The Core 2 Quad, Core 2 Duo and even the Pentium Dual-Core lines, on the other hand, will continue at least up to the middle of 2009.

Let's take a look at the processor and chipset details...
