Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player Review

Provided Accessories

The WD TV player comes with a neat little remote control. Like the player itself, it has a nice glossy finish which is particularly susceptible to fingerprint smears. You should keep it shrink-wrapped if you want to avoid that. WD even includes two AAA batteries so you can quickly get the WD TV running.

Remote Control & Batteries

For what the WD TV costs, it's understandable that WD did not include a HDMI cable. If you are looking for some HD goodness, be sure to purchase a HDMI cable together with the WD TV. For a quick start or for use with standard definition TV, WD provides a set of composite AV cables. Unfortunately, the WD TV does not even support component video output. You have to choose between the high-end output of HDMI or surviving on the composite video output.

My Passport Holder

If you intend to use a WD Passport USB drive with the WD TV, then you should use the provided My Passport holder. Just slide the Passport drive into the holder and it will hold the drive in the vertical position. The holder is only designed to fit the WD Passport drive so if you are using some other portable HDD, you will have to place them on their sides. Just be sure not to stack your portable HDD on top of the WD TV player.

While the WD TV supports a wide variety of formats, there are some formats that it cannot support. For such files, WD provides a free copy of ArcSoft MediaConverter 2.5 so you can convert them into any format that the WD TV supports. If you like MediaConverter 2.5, you can upgrade it to the new MediaConverter 3 for US$ 29.99.

CD & Rubber Feet

AC Adaptor

Remember the right side of the player, which doubles as the base when the player is placed vertically? If you intend to place the player vertically, then you should use the rubber feet WD provides to improve its grip and prevent it from toppling over.

The player runs on electricity, so it obviously need a power source. Voilà! We introduce the AC adaptor for the WD TV. Okay, okay, so it's just a standard AC adaptor, except for one minor but important detail. WD provided us with the Type A (North American / Japanese) power plug, instead of the British Type G power plug used here as well as in most parts of the world. Remember to pick up a plug converter on the way back!
