Western Digital RE (WD4000FYYZ) 4 TB Hard Disk Drive Review Rev. 2.0

The 4 TB Western Digital RE (WD4000FYYZ)

Like many other 3.5" desktop hard drives, the Western Digital WD4000FYYZ has a label on the top plate and an uncovered PCB on the underside. The label has a lot of important information, like the hard drive model and capacity. There are also interesting details like its date and place of manufacture. This particular drive was manufactured in Malaysia on 10 September, 2012.

Do note that while this is not an Advanced Format drive. Western Digital has only implemented Advanced Format in their consumer-grade drives. All enterprise-grade drives are still using the old 512-byte sector format. This is one reason why Western Digital needed to use 5 platters, instead of 4 platters to achieve a 4 TB storage capacity in this drive.

Usable Capacity

This Western Digital RE 4 TB hard disk drive officially has a formatted capacity of 4,000,787 MB. We checked that out by formatting it in NTFS using Microsoft Windows 7.

The actual formatted capacity was 4,000,650,883,072 bytes. This is slightly (137 MB) lower than the official formatted capacity. With about 216 MB allocated to the NTFS file system, the actual usable capacity remained slightly above 4 TB.

Let's take a look at its specifications.
