Samsung NX1 Sports Photography Tips By Yaman Ibrahim

Incidentally, take a look at this video fo the Samsung NX1's "focus peaking" feature. The "focus peaking" feature basically helps the photographer determine when which part of the image is in focus.

The parts that are in focus will be highlighted in white (the colour can be changed). This is very useful when you use the Samsung NX1 in manual focus. It's much, much easier to confirm when the target is in focus.

Samsung NX1 Video Recording Capability

Although I was planning to include 5 sample videos to demonstrate the Samsung NX1's impressive video recording capabilities, I was stymied by the NX1's use of the H.265 video codec.

The H.265 codec, which is also known as the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), is highly-efficient but poorly supported at this moment. YouTube does not support H.265, probably because Google (which owns YouTube) is pushing their own VP9 and eventually VP10 video codecs. As a result, I cannot upload them to YouTube to share with you guys... yet.

I will look into converting them to a compatible format and share them with you guys later. In the meantime, let me share some information on the video recording capability of the Samsung NX1.

The Samsung NX1 is capable of recording 4K videos at 24 fps but it requires at least a Class 10 microSD card. The test cards we were given were only Class 4 - recording 4K videos will therefore stutter once the buffer is filled, because the NX1 has to wait until enough data is transferred to the card before it resumes recording. However, I had no problem recording short 4K video clips (of l1 seconds or less) without stuttering.

Although I cannot share the video samples with you at the moment, I can share some details of the H.265's encoding efficiency.

The Samsung NX1 recorded the 4K video samples with a resolution of 4096x2160 with a frame rate of 24 fps and a variable bit rate of about 75,000 kbps. The audio was recorded at 48 kHz with a variable bit rate of 128 kbps. A 11 second video took up just over 100 MB of space, while a 8 second video took up under 77 MB of space. That averages out to just 9.3 MB per recorded second, allowing a 32 GB card to provide at least 58 minutes of recording time!

We recorded the smaller 1920x1080 video samples with a frame rate of 50 fps and a variable bit rate of about 40,000 kbps. The audio was recorded at 48 kHz with a variable bit rate of 128 kbps. Our three videos of 18 seconds, 16 seconds and 4 seconds took up 94 MB, 83 MB and 21 MB of space respectively, which averages out to just 5.2 MB per recorded second. A 32 GB card can therefore record up to 105 minutes of 1080p video.
