Introduction

Thermalright is a well-established player in the PC cooling market, designing and producing heatsinks for both CPUs and graphics cards. Their reputation for quality and performance have made them very popular amongst hardware enthusiasts.

One important reason for Thermalright's success is their emphasis on continuous innovation. Thermalright has always been pushing the envelope with new ideas and concepts to better satisfy the needs of hardware enthusiasts.

Today, we will take a close look at a product of their innovation - the Thermalright SI-120 CPU Cooler.

Thermalright SI-120

The SI-120 is a relatively new heatsink in Thermalright's line-up. It was actually released in August 2005. Based on the XP-120 design, it comes with some modifications to address installation and motherboard compatibility issues. As you can see, it's a rather big heatsink.

This is what Thermalright has to say about the SI-120 :

  • Only requires a 120mm fan for maximum cooling capability
  • Multiple heatpipes for well spread heat around aluminum fins
  • Fins soldered to copper base (nickel plated) to ensure effective contact
  • Light weight and easy installation
  • Compatibility across multiple platforms (socket 478/754/939/940)
  • Enormous wingspan gives extra cooling to MOSFET or NB chipset

The SI-120 has a very unique fin design. With wave-shaped fins and five heatpipes, the SI-120 will certainly catch attention of the case modder, if not the overclocker.

The Package

The SI-120 comes in Thermalright's standard brown box. It's not the prettiest option available, but it definitely protects the goodies during transit.

The package includes the following items:-

  • Heatsink Assembly (SI-120)
  • Thermalright Sticker
  • Thermal Grease
  • Retention Bracket
  • Screws
  • Wire Clips
  • Strips of Rubber

The SI-120 can be used on the Intel Socket 478 and AMD K8 platforms out of the box. LGA775 installation requires you to purchase an additional mounting kit at a nominal cost.

Now, let's go take a look at the heatsink!
