Introduction

Based on the Intel X48 Express chipset, the BlackOps is Foxconn's ultimate motherboard for the Intel LGA775 platform. They threw everything but the kitchen sink into this motherboard, making it their ultimate X48 motherboard and possibly one of the best in the market. In this review, we will be taking a look at the Foxconn BlackOps X48 motherboard and what it offers the discerning enthusiast. First, let's take a look at its key features.

4-In-1 Quantum Cooler

The Foxconn BlackOps features their unique 4-in-1 Quantum Cooler, which allows for the user-selection of air, water or liquid nitrogen cooling for the north bridge, the south bridge and the VRM areas.

The BlackOps motherboard comes with a water cooling block for the north bridge chip. You can remove it for passive air cooling or attach a provided fan for active air cooling. For extreme overclockers, Foxconn included an extension tower that allows you to cool the north bridge chip using liquid nitrogen or dry ice.

Quantum BIOS

Unlike many other manufacturers, Foxconn's Quantum BIOS is targeted at the enthusiast and overclocking community. Hence, it comes with an incredible range of BIOS menus and settings. It also boasts enhanced support for quad-core overclocking.

8-Phase Digital PWM

The BlackOps motherboard also comes with an 8-phase digital PWM. This digital power management system operates with better power efficiency, and allows for a faster and more stable response to changes in power consumption. It also allows for a higher output current capability to support extreme overclocking.

AEGIS Panel

AEGIS Panel is a Windows-based utility that provides system information about fan speeds, temperatures, voltages, CPU clock speed, etc. It also provides quick and easy overclocking options, with a range of frequency and voltage adjustments.

100% Solid Capacitors

Foxconn’s use of only solid capacitors improves the BlackOps' long-term reliability. Replacing electrolytic capacitors with solid versions removes the risk of capacitor failure that can damage the PCB and surrounding components, whilst improving overall system performance and stability. Solid capacitors are much more durable than standard electrolytic capacitors, typically lasting around 6 times longer and withstanding higher operating temperatures.

Ferrite Choke Design

The ferrite choke design improves power delivery to the motherboard. By using an iron-oxide core, the ferrite choke design can hold energy at a higher frequency than traditional iron cores. This reduces power loss, and offers more stability and better performance, especially under heavy load.
