Conclusion
If you have considered buying a FireGL card, you should know just how expensive they are. The FireGL cards are usually about five times more expensive than equivalent Radeon cards. Try this mod instead and you will be able to own a FireGL card and save yourself a lot of money!
As you can see, this is a very simple mod. Although some Radeon cards cannot be modded into FireGL cards, the process itself is very simple. You don't even need to physically modify your card! Of course, you have to remember that this mod does not always work. However, it's definitely worth a try if you want the performance of a FireGL card for free.
However, if you need Dual-DVI output, this mod will not be the thing for you. Unfortunately, there are no Radeon cards with Dual-DVI support. If you only need one DVI output, then bingo! Just buy a Radeon and mod it into a FireGL!
The performance results are certainly remarkable in workstation applications. From Frank's results, the card's performance improved by 50-222%! However, gamers will not benefit from this mod since the FireGL optimizations do not apply to games.
Incidentally, if you attempt this mod, please do us a favour and report your experience here! Thanks!
