Check Out The Samsung Galaxy A5 & Galaxy A3 Smartphones
This is the Samsung Galaxy A3 smartphone. Retailing at the MSRP of RM 899 (~$259), the Galaxy A3 is targeted at selfie-loving youths on a tight budget.
As such, its 4.5" AMOLED display has a resolution of 540 x 960, and at 6.9 mm, it's actually a shave thicker than the Samsung Galaxy A5. It also has a smaller 1,900 mAh battery.
But it shares the same 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor and front 5 MP camera as the Galaxy A5, as well as 16 GB of flash storage.
The Samsung Galaxy A3 is a smaller 4.5" smartphone, and contrary to what the specifications say, comes with just 1 GB of RAM.
The confusion is due to the fact that the Samsung Galaxy A3 in other countries may have more RAM. The Chinese SKU, for example, comes with 1.5 GB of RAM.
It also comes with an 8 MP camera (with an LED flash) on the back, and a 5 MP camera in the front.
And here's the Samsung Galaxy A5. It uses the same 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor but pairs that with 2 GB of RAM and a larger 5" display with a resolution of 1280x720.
Although it's a larger smartphone than the Galaxy A3, it's a shave thinner at just 6.7 mm. Even so, they managed to squeeze in a larger 2,300 mAh battery.
It has a launch price of RM 1,199 (~$349) with 16 GB of flash storage.
The difference in photographic capability actually lies in the main camera at the back. The A5 sports a higher-resolution 13 MP camera, while the A3 only uses an 8 MP camera.
The front cameras of both models do not have any LED flash. They therefore compare rather poorly (spec-wise) to the HTC Desire EYE, whose launch we covered recently.
The HTC Desire EYE not only sports a 13 MP front camera, it's also supported by dual LED flashes. It is also waterproof to boot.
It allows the Samsung Galaxy A smartphones to take wider angle (120 degrees) photos to fit more people in the same photo without using a selfie stick.
Wide Selfie is actually a software feature. The Samsung Galaxy A smartphones do not come with a wide-angle front camera.
It works by taking 3 shots which are automatically stitched together to create a composite photo. Think of it as a mini-panoramic photo.
The Wide Selfie mode works in both horizontal and vertical modes. A mini display on the corner will guide you through the process.
Basically you start in the middle of the composite frame. Just press the shutter once, and SWIVEL (not move) the Galaxy A smartphone left and right and it'll automatically take the other two shots.
If you move it out of frame, the Galaxy A smartphone will vibrate as a warning.
If you swivel the Galaxy A smartphone properly, it'll snap the left and right shots and immediately process them to give you the final composite frame.
Obviously, for this to work properly, everyone in the group must stay relatively still, and you must have a steady hand. Otherwise, you could end up with "works of art".

The Upcoming Samsung Galaxy A7 Smartphone
Although not launched today, Samsung Malaysia demoed the Samsung Galaxy A7 smartphone, which they will launch sometime next month (February 2015).
The Samsung Galaxy A7 comes with a faster 1.5 GHz Snapdragon 615 quad-core processor and a higher-resolution 5.5" Super AMOLED display. Even though it is a larger smartphone, it is thinner than the Galaxy A5, at just 6.3 mm.
In other aspects though, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy A7 is similar to the Galaxy A5 that debuted yesterday.
It sports the same 13MP back camera and LED light and 5 MP front camera. It also comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of flash storage.
It'll also ship with Android 4.4.4 (KitKat). No word of when Samsung will release Android 5.0 (Lollipop) for the Galaxy A series.
